Chapter Seven

We were slammed at the store the next day, which was good for sales, and less so for sleuthing. Everyone had commitments that night, which meant we couldn’t get together in person, but we agreed to connect by video call at ten. They all wanted to hear me read more of Gideon’s book, the oddest type of bedtime story.

The creepy stalker dudes down the block from my house were gone when Teag drove me home and waited while I sluiced the front walk with a fresh batch of the protection mixture. He assured me he was using the same mix at his home with Anthony. I felt exhausted by the time I went inside, but having Baxter hopping around my feet perked me up. A text message from Kell let me know his video editing was taking a lot longer than usual, and he was probably going to sleep at his place so he could work into the wee hours. He wouldn’t be on the video call but wanted an update if we found out anything important.

“Guess it’s just you and me for dinner, Bax,” I said as I put kibble into his dish. The fridge was full of leftovers from the night before, so I wasn’t going to starve. I made myself a plate, microwaved it, and turned on the TV news while I ate.

I couldn’t wait to dive into Gideon’s story. My intuition said that we had a deadline, reinforced by the omens, which were getting worse.

News chatter focused on the “monster” storm in the Caribbean that looked likely to hit the coast hard within a few days. Charleston’s tremors had grown more frequent, and experts worried about a fault line between here and Bermuda that had been dormant for years and suddenly showed signs of activity.

The governor made an evacuation order—voluntary so far, but that would become mandatory if the storm moved closer. I knew we wouldn’t be leaving no matter what the orders said. We had a job to do, and most of us had extra abilities to help us survive. Teag and I knew that Kell and Anthony—and Maggie—wouldn’t leave without us, so we’d need to provide for their safety. My house was the best bet for a sanctuary. It had withstood hurricanes for a hundred years. Unfortunately, I had no idea whether it was strong enough to outlast an earthquake. I hoped I didn’t have to find out.

I got comfortable with Baxter next to me and opened the memoir to where we had left off, looking for the best place to start while I was waiting for the others to come on the video call.

I skimmed several pages as Gideon talked about the difficulties on a voyage due to bad weather and illness among the crew. He wrote at length about the repairs his ship needed after another run-in with pirates and how he used the time in port to set up business for the rest of the season.

Gideon’s personality and voice came
